The MasterLink Shop Writer Notebook is an internal information storage system designed to help your business maintain organized technical notes, operational procedures, troubleshooting information, and reference material in one central location.
The Notebook can become one of the most valuable tools in your business because it allows you to preserve information that otherwise might be:
•forgotten
•misplaced
•kept only in paper form
•dependent upon one employee's memory
The Notebook is ideal for storing:
•service procedures
•diagnostic tips
•wiring diagrams
•supplier information
•common repair solutions
•shop policies
•equipment instructions
•vendor reference material
•technical bulletins
•frequently used measurements or specifications
Because the Notebook is accessible from within MasterLink Shop Writer, employees can quickly locate important information while actively working on a service unit or communicating with a client.
The Notebook window is divided into three primary sections.
The lower portion of the screen contains a browse list showing all Notebook topics currently stored in the system.
As you highlight a topic in the list:
•the topic title
•the related notes
•and any attached image
will automatically display in the upper sections of the screen.
This allows rapid browsing of stored information without repeatedly opening separate windows.
The upper left section contains:
•the Topic field
•the main text editing area
The Topic field is the title used to identify the information.
Examples:
•Ford Fuel Pump Relay Locations
•Brake Bleeding Procedure
•Transmission Adaptation Reset
•Tire Pressure Sensor Programming
•Emergency Vendor Contacts
The large text window below the topic allows extensive notes and reference information to be stored.
This area may contain:
•procedures
•observations
•specifications
•troubleshooting steps
•reminders
•copied technical information
The upper right section is reserved for associated graphics or scanned images.
Examples include:
•wiring diagrams
•connector locations
•parts illustrations
•photographs
•service bulletins
•pinout diagrams
•equipment setup references
To attach an image:
1.Save the graphic file into the MasterLink directory
2.Enter the exact file name, including extension, in the field labeled:
Image File Name
Example:
fuelpump.jpg
or
wiringdiagram.png
The image will automatically display whenever that Notebook topic is highlighted.
Select the View Image button to display the image in a larger viewing window.
This is especially useful for:
•large wiring diagrams
•detailed illustrations
•scanned service documents
The image viewer includes scroll bars so oversized graphics can be reviewed completely.
Notebook entries may be modified at any time.
To update an entry:
1.Highlight the desired topic
2.Make the necessary changes
3.Press the Save button
To create a new Notebook entry:

The Notebook supports standard Windows text editing operations.

This allows information to be:
•reorganized
•copied between entries
•imported from outside documents
•updated efficiently
Standard Windows highlighting procedures are used when selecting text.
Many shops successfully use the Notebook for:
•common repair fixes
•repeat problem diagnostics
•specialized procedures
•employee training notes
•vendor contact instructions
•equipment operation guides
•shop safety reminders
•warranty procedures
•internal policies
Over time, the Notebook becomes a searchable library of operational experience unique to your business.
•Use clear topic titles
•Keep information organized by subject
•Attach diagrams whenever possible
•Update procedures as technology changes
•Store repeat diagnostic solutions
•Avoid duplicate topics
•Use consistent naming methods
•Regularly review outdated information
