When editing records, here are some basic, but important, rules to follow:

 

•        Make a backup of all files before doing any editing

•        Be sure you know what changes actually need to be made

•        Watch your keystrokes

•        Never save changes until you verify that the new data was entered correctly

•        Make sure that you do not change "linking" values ( items that tie a record to other records or files )

•        When you complete your work, rebuild the file indexes

•        Do not try to "adjust your books" by changing values ... it will result in inconsistencies in data
